Energy Star
Last year we obtained Energy Star partner status. With this status we have gone out and looked for the best possible construction techniques and materials to give our clients energy efficient features at an affordable price.
The methods of construction have not changed that much for us. We always sealed our homes, provided Energy Star windows, and had some of the highest R-Values available. Some of the upgrades we have done comes at a little higher cost, but many of the changes are actually turning out to save money for our clients.
For instance, going to structural insulated panels in lieu of a typical stick framed wall. This upgrades the true R-Value of our exterior walls to R-24, whereas, a typical stick framed 2x6 wall with batt insulation has a true R-Value in the neighborhood of R-13. www.ornl.gov The SIP panels themselves cost more than a stick framed wall, but it only takes about 25% as much labor to erect them.
The other area that we've really focused on is alternative sources of energy. With the major one being in solar water heating. The system we have specified on several projects ends up costing no more than a typical tankless water heater after the tax incentives provided by Federal and State governments. Currently these incentives are 30% of the system costs with a maximum of $2000.
